Can You Bring Nail Clippers on a Plane?

As a “nail fashionista” and enthusiast that cannot sustain bad-looking nails (and that travels quite a bit)… the question of whether I can or cannot take nail clippers on a plane bothered me more than once.

Planes and Nail Clippers – Short Answer…

The short answer is YES!

As stated on the TSA website, you are allowed to bring nail clippers on the plane, both in the carry-on baggage and within the checked bags.

Do note that they have the following disclaimer: “The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.”

I strongly recommend you check the TSA website every once in a while to make sure it is accurate as regulations do tend to change.

I also recommend that you make sure to check within the relevant carrier’s guidelines as these obviously may change from one airline to the other, not to mention from one country to the other.

Can You Take Other Nail Essentials on a Plane?

Can you bring nail clippers on a plane? This is a question that surprisingly many people have when they are preparing to travel. Either because it is part of their basic flight kit or because they NEED a mid-flight emergency manicure, the answer, unfortunately, is not a simple one.

There are different rules for different airlines, and even then, the rules can change depending on the time of year or the type of flight you are taking.

The TSA does give its employees the choice based on their judgment to approve or disapprove. But, usually, there is no reason to deny nail clippers from a plane. The same goes for the larger version, toenail clippers are also allowed on a plane.

The rule of thumb (not literally) is that you are not allowed to have something that is in the form of a blade and is more than 6 cm long (roughly 2.5 inches).

This means also short tweezers should be allowed.

If you do travel a lot, I recommend finding a kit that will stay in your carry-on bag and that you’ll know works for everybody. Amazon has these in abundance.

Travel Nail Clippers and Kits

Last small note – keep in mind restrictions do tend to get more severe over time. It is for the safety of all of us. Please, if you find yourself in a situation where you are denied from taking your nail kit in your carry-on bag, do not be angry with the rep, they are doing this to protect us!
